Oakwood Police Department Is Hiring For A Part-Time Patrol Officer

Duties: The primary job responsibility is to serve and protect people and property. To accomplish this task, the Village of Oakwood will ask Officers to carry out specific duties on a regular basis, these include, but not limited to: Patrolling the Village of Oakwood, enforcing laws, answering calls for service, conducting investigations, arresting individuals suspected of committing crimes, issuing citations, testifying in court, and conducting traffic stops, enforcing Village Codes, assisting other Law enforcement Officers and agencies. Police Officers must also be capable of completing reports and filling out forms regarding incidents. Officers’ duties include but is not limited to generate self-initiated field activity, respond to all requests from the citizenry, may be asked to work special tasks and other duties as assigned or directed by the Chief of Police.

Examples of work by a police officer include but are not limited to:

  • Accomplishes departmental law enforcement, order maintenance, criminal investigation and criminal intelligence objectives through effective accomplishment of assigned duties;

  • Provides emergency assistance to citizens and other agencies in need of police services;

  • Investigates and reports factual information regarding all incidents of crime personally discovered or reported by a citizen;

  • Conducts self initiated enforcement activity as it relates to his or her assignment;

  • Engages in problem solving utilizing the S.A.R.A concept;

  • Makes arrests and processes offenders;

  • Conducts traffic control functions such as direction, enforcement, investigation of traffic crashes and parking enforcement;

  • Intervenes in interpersonal crisis, conflict and domestic violence situations to protect life, property and personal rights;

  • Initiates investigations into all suspicious or hazardous circumstances observed while patrolling assigned area;

  • Responds to calls for service as assigned by dispatch or requested by citizens;

  • Cooperates in the prosecution of criminal offenders by court testimony, grand jury testimony and at coroner’s inquests;

  • Familiar with repeat criminal offenders, their method of operation, haunts and associates;

  • Attends approved training to remain knowledgeable regarding current law enforcement practices and techniques;

  • Conducts covert activities or surveillance assignments;

  • Prepares statements of suspects, witnesses, and victims;

  • Conducts door-to-door investigative canvassing and interviews;

  • Performs or assists in specialized task such as arson investigation, crime scene, vice, narcotics, juvenile investigations, canine, firearms, special weapons and tactics, fingerprint identification and intelligence collection;

  • Performs field training function as assigned;

  • Develops public contracts and confidential sources;

  • Conducts criminal background checks as required;

  • Makes public presentations regarding various facets of police service as required;

  • Enhances police-citizen collaboration and police-community relations;

Obligations: All Police Officers are expected to carry out their duties and responsibilities impartially and maintain a firm, fair, and consistent mentality in dealing with the citizens. Officers will not show favor or ill will to anyone based on race, sexuality, gender, religion, or age. The Village of Oakwood also expects Officers to practice their duties without the use of excessive force as prescribed by statue. They are encouraged to mingle and make contact with the citizens as part of their patrol duties and always promote a positive outlook of the village and Police Department.

Skills: Law Enforcement is a physically and mentally demanding career. Skills critical to success include good perception and leadership skills, the ability to multi-task, exercising good judgment, and physical stamina. The ability to listen to and transpose information obtained into Police Report documents and forms. Officers must be at least 21 years old and have a high-school diploma, college preferred but not required. Previous Law Enforcement Certification and Experience is preferred. All Officers must meet criteria set by the Illinois Law Enforcement and Training Standards Board. All candidates must pass a background check, submit to fingerprinting, and a physical and psychological evaluation and polygraph test.

Benefits: Salary based on Experience and Training. (with Mayor/Board approval). Work schedule as assigned by the Chief of Police to fill the needs of the department. Various hours- Mainly 2nd shift or modified power shift, weekends and holidays(must be flexible with shift and work days). Equal Opportunity Employer. 18-month probation period. 16 week FTO training program for entry level Officers and a Modified Training program for Lateral or experienced officers. On going training provided to keep up with state mandates and the department needs. Uniforms, vest provided initially and an annual clothing allowance.
